Bavarian Bike Ride to Oberammergau and the Passion Play
12th – 17th September 2010

For further information on this unique challenge, contact Mike Millar at the EMMS International office on 0131 313 3828.

Gripped by war, poverty and plague, the villagers of Oberammergau, in Bavaria, southern Germany vowed to put on a 'passion play' every ten years…

That was back in 1633. They survived, and performed the first Oberammergau Passion Play in 1634. Ever since, their descendants have carried out that pledge.

For the past four centuries the tradition has continued, every ten years. Only villagers have been allowed to take part. And that is what will happen yet again in 2010.

This is a great opportunity to combine a sponsored 3 day/270 kms bike ride from Salzburg to Oberammergau and see this wonderful play.

Day 1 Sunday Meeting place at Munich airport. Transfer to Salzburg, Mozart’s birth place. The Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Depending on time there will be a chance to look around the city. Overnight Salzburg.

Day 2 Monday - Salzburg to Prien. Start cycling and cross the Austrian/German border. We cycle on quiet roads on undulating terrain towards Prien on Lake Chiemsee,  Bavaria’s largest lake. Bavaria has some of the finest combination of gentle cycling terrain with scenic mountain backdrops. The market town Prien am Chiemsee is the biggest settlement on the lake. Approx. 83kms.

Day 3 Tuesday - Prien to Tegernesee. Departing from Prien, we will enjoy the beauty of the countryside as we pass through the typical Bavarian villages. Our accommodation today at Tegernsee which combines the beauty of its alpine landscape and the rich history. The town is also located on a lake shore and is famous for its Benedictine abbey founded in 746 AD. Approx. 95 km

Day 4 Wednesday - Tegernsee to Oberammargau. Today is relatively more hilly. We retrace our route back to Gmund at Tegernsee, where we head west toward Bad Tolz, which is known for its historic medieval town, the spas and spectacular views of the Alps. On our way to Kochel am See we will pass the Benediktbeuern Abbey which has more than 1260 year old history. We continue to our final destination – Oberammargau.  approx 90kms Overnight in guesthouse accommodation.

Day 5 Thursday Free day and Passion Play. Overnight Oberammergau.

Day 6 Friday Transfer back to Munich.
