Prayer Focus - Week Commencing 16th October 2011
October 17, 2011 - 09:35
Mike Millar, Events Project Officer
I have recently returned from our Cycle Malawi 2011 and was struck, as was everyone else there, by the warmth of our welcome there. For me the most wonderful part was the music which, although I couldn’t understand the words, moved me deeply. Much of the music was so simple – a capella or with a basic percussion accompaniment – and somehow this added to its majesty.
Music has the power to move us beyond the rational, the mundane and the boundaries of language to a place of common understanding. It can bind us together and give a glimpse of heaven.
“Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.” Psalm 150
Lord, thank you for the gift of music. Thank you for the way it lifts and unites us. Thank you for the joy it brings and for the insights and peace that it can give. Let your music inspire us, heal us, thrill us and calm us.
While we hear, play and sing, help us use our music to understand, to pray and to worship you, who has given us this power to transcend the constraints of our earthly lives. Amen.
