Prayer Focus - Week Commencing 1st January 2012
January 4, 2012 - 11:49
Tiyanjane and Umodzi Clinics, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), Blantyre, Malawi
- Tiyanjane Clinic provides ongoing support for adults living with HIV & AIDS or other life-limiting diseases following their discharge from the adult medical wards at QECH in Blantyre, Malawi. Give thanks for Tiyanjane – for Dr Jane Bates and the team who work there, providing palliative care where it is needed.
- The Clinic operates with few resources, limited diagnostic facilities and poor staff-to-patient ratios. Give thanks to God for His faithfulness and provision that enables the Clinic to give treatment to large numbers of patients, many of whom are under the age of forty and have advanced incurable diseases.
- Give thanks for the Palliative Care Support Trust, through which additional support is channeled, enabling Tiyanjane to employ more staff and keep a continuous supply of essential palliative care drugs.
- Praise God that Tiyanjane is actively building capacity in palliative care in Malawi and is at the forefront of training medical students and others who spend time with them on clinical attachments.
- Umodzi is the name of the children’s palliative care team, who provide support for children who have incurable diseases, such as cancer, HIV, heart disease or brain damage. Pray for the Clinical Officer, Fred Chiputula, and his team, who deliver palliative care to children at QECH and in the surrounding area.
- Pray for the children who need palliative care and give thanks for Umodzi’s holistic approach to their health and well-being. Give thanks that, in addition to the medical staff, a ‘play lady’ is employed and that, together, they seek to improve the quality of life of the children and their families.
- Tiyanjane provides home-based palliative care services through a community nursing team based at the Health Centre at Ndirande, a township on the edge of Blantyre with a population of around 200,000. Pray for the palliative care nurse based at the health centre, who takes referrals from both the hospital team and community-based volunteers, spending most of her time travelling to patients’ homes to deliver support, advice and clinical care.
