‘As you relax on your holiday, please pray for those serving in mission’
Refresh & Recharge - James' Blog, July 2010
As our thoughts and attention begin to turn towards summer holidays, I’ve been thinking about colleagues across world that work in isolated places, often far away from family and friends and in situations that many of would struggle to cope with.
I’ve seen first-hand how many are constantly “on-call”. They have a professional role, a pastoral role and a position of leadership within the church and the community. Although few admit to it, it must be hugely demanding and, dare I say it, draining. Despite this, many continue to serve with a dedication that is truly inspiring.
I think that we can play an important role in supporting mission workers through prayer and encouragement. A few verses that encourage me come from Isaiah 41 (New Living Translation):
9 I took you from the ends of the earth,
from its farthest corners I called you.
I said, 'You are my servant';
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
It is good to know that God places us where he wants us to be, and that he will strengthen us, help us and guide us. He never asks us to do something beyond our capability.
However, its equally important that those of us who aren’t directly serving in mission offer as much encouragement and support as we can to those working in difficult places at home and overseas. In their weak moments we can intercede for them and to ask God to strengthen, help and uphold them.
So as you relax on your holiday, please pray for those serving in mission, that they would be encouraged, sustained and comforted in difficult times, that they would find space to recharge their batteries and continue to serve those in need.
Have a great summer!
