Goods to Malawi

August 5, 2010 - 15:25

Over the past months we have been collecting and sorting items for sending on to our partners in Malawi. With the help of a volunteer in the office we packed 56 boxes of baby clothes, knitted blankets, knitting needles and wool, sheets, soap and football kits for use in northern Malawi. Our grateful thanks are due to all those individuals and groups who have been busy knitting, collecting items, and delivering them to our office.
The story below, from Mulanje Mission Hospital, shows how great the need is for baby clothes and hats.

“The cold season is upon us and for the past few weeks it has been very cold with showers and cloudy days.  Just a few days ago there was a woman who came to our Hospital with a very sick child and she had a worn out dress that was barely covering her back and the baby in her hands was wrapped in a very thin worn out cloth which was wet with rain because she had walked a long distance to get to the hospital.  She was shivering and the baby’s feet and hands were freezing cold.  The baby had very severe pneumonia and we provided blankets to keep him warm and started him on treatment.  We also gave the mother an extra blanket to keep her warm.  Fortunately a few days on treatment the baby got better and was sent home.  The hospital cannot afford to provide sweaters and hats for these unfortunate babies.  It is in light of this that is why we would like to sincerely thank individuals and organisations who have brought warmth to these babies by donating boxes of knitted vests, sweaters, hats and boots.  You have not only brought smiles to the mothers but also you have saved lives of these precious babies because they will be protected from the cold that would otherwise give them pneumonia. It is such a lovely sight to see the babies looking comfortable and warm in the little hats and sweaters.  We don’t take these donations for granted knowing that you spend your precious time on knitting these things and the process of sending them here is not easy also.  May the good Lord bless you and restore your strength.”
