Our Work

We work in partnership with communities in the poorest parts of the world to transform their lives, improving life chances through effective and sustainable health and education, and by sharing our Christian faith in words and actions.

What we do
EMMS International is a registered Scottish charity based in Edinburgh. Our primary focus is supporting health and education projects in India, Nepal and Malawi. We do not employ any overseas staff and work instead with Christian organisations based in the communities that they serve. We have a supporter base across the whole of the UK and beyond.

We run a Student Elective Bursary Scheme to support students working in Mission Hospitals and manage the Hawthornbrae Trust which makes grants to help people from within the city of Edinburgh recuperate from illness.

Why we do it
All of the countries in which we work have significant health and social challenges. Access to affordable healthcare and education, communicable diseases, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS and gender equality are common challenges. Maternal deaths and under-5 child mortality are high and government expenditure on health and education is low.

Health and education are essential to enable people to reach their full potential and break the cycle of poverty. To this end, we focus on 8 key areas:

·         Hospital Services
·         Training & education of staff and volunteers
·         Primary Health Care
·         Improvements to buildings and accommodation
·         Community Health projects
·         Palliative Care
·         Provision of medical supplies, vehicles & equipment
·         Primary Schools

How we do it
EMMS International aims to empower local people to meet their own health and education needs. We encourage them through support from individuals, organisations, churches, schools and communities across the UK. We also want UK supporters to learn and benefit from these links and aspire to bring communities closer together through our activities.

Our work and values are rooted in our Christian faith. Jesus Christ reaches out to all people without exception and we to do the same. All of our partner projects are open to everyone and do not discriminate on any basis. Along with our partners, we want to raise education standards and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health.
