Embangweni Hospital
Embangweni is located in Mzimba District, in northern Malawi, close to the border with Zambia. It serves a population of 100,000, operating four remote health centres and 23 mobile clinics each month.
Embangweni hospital admits around 5000 patients each year, and delivers over 2,000 babies. More than 25,000 patients attended the Outpatients Department and nearly 1,500 patients visited the dental surgery.
Major issues facing the hospital continue to be HIV and AIDS; malaria, malnutrition, meningitis and anaemia.
Within its Primary Healthcare Department, the hospital has a wide-ranging programme that focuses on areas such as nutrition, agriculture and food security, sanitation, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV & AIDS and maternal and child health.
We are currently providing support to fund over £150,000 worth of improvements at the hospital, including:
- A new hospital laundry
- New staff accommodation
- A new Children's wing
- Improving the maternity ward and "at-risk" mother’s accommodation
