Enukweni Maternity Unit
EMMS International recently funded the building of a new maternity unit, staff accommodation and a HIV Testing & Counselling Centre at Enukweni.
Upgraded facilities at Enukweni include 8-bed ante-natal and post-natal wards, a modern delivery room, an intensive care unit, toilets, showers and washing/laundry facilities. The project cost £42,000. EMMS International sourced £12,000 from the ECHO Trust and contributed £29,615 from its 2005 Malawi bike ride, while the local community donated the bricks.
The unit was equipped by a generous donation of medical equipment from BBC Scotland - items that had been in storage since a TV medical drama ceased production a few years ago.
The unit caters for 200 ante-natal cases each month and 100 deliveries each month.
