Chifundo

Chifundo, meaning "compassion" in the Chichewa language of Malawi, sums up these life-changing partnerships which bring healthcare to the poorest families in some of the most difficult-to-reach areas of Malawi.

With desperately under-resourced health facilities, these rural communities find themselves increasingly in need of palliative care due to the increase in life-limiting Non-Communicable Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and respiratory disease. The long-lasting effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is taking its toll with just over 10% of Malawi’s 18 million people living with HIV.

Chifundo offers a holistic approach, providing pain relief and treatment of symptoms alongside social and spiritual support to patients and their families. This project covers every district of Malawi and will take Malawi to the highest level of integration of palliative care to the Malawian health service- the same level as the UK by mid-2021.

Like thousands of others, malaria had left Mphatso with cerebral palsy. Unable to walk or speak, he needed regular physiotherapy. Thankfully, after a visit from EMMS-supported healthcare professionals who helped create a holistic care support package tailored to meet the family’s needs, Mphatso’s quality of life greatly improved. He received an adapted chair, his mother was taught how to carry out his physiotherapy exercises at home, and he is now able to sit outside again with his friends.

Many other people in rural communities in Malawi are permanently affected by malaria and in need of similar support. This Christmas, we need your help to continue to change lives through better healthcare and to bring hope where sadly hope is often lacking.
