Give hope to young women like Maggie Longwe.
Maggie is HIV positive. In Malawi, this is shameful, she was left feeling worthless and isolated. Knowing that any child of hers would face the same terrible stigma, she had little hope until a Mother Buddy trained by one of EMMS International’s local partners arrived on her door step. Telling her about the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV this Mother Buddy made Maggie feel valued and cared for. In time, Maggie gave birth to a healthy baby.
Today Maggie wants other young women like her to know they matter and has trained as a Mother Buddy herself to share the hope and joy she’s experienced.
As part of the project, Mother Buddies receive hens to help improve their lives.
For Maggie, this has had a transforming impact on her life,
"My diet has improved since all the grocery owners now get eggs from me, I am able to pay school fees for my first born with no sweat of borrowing as I used to.”
Her income from egg sales has financed vital home improvements, ready for the rainy season.
Maggie has been set free from the stigma of being HIV+ and has a healthy baby. Thanks to the Mother Buddy project, she has been empowered to provide for her own family and to care for other women.
