A history of medical mission

EMMS International's story begins with the founding of the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society in 1841. This rich history is recorded in letters, meeting books, reports, maps, photographs and other documents. The archive is under the care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and can be accessed by researchers and enthusiasts by arrangement.

Accessing the archive

The RCSE published an article including a brief summary listing. This is a great starting place for anyone looking to explore the contents of the collection.

The College is in the process of cataloguing the full collection and will make some visual material available in digital format in due course. The archive team are happy to accommodate any researchers that wish to access the EMMS material. Potential researchers or anyone that wishes to view the archive should contact the College directly before visiting  as they are working on a strict appointment basis .
