Bharat's Story: Living with leprosy and empowered with confidence

Bharat has been living with leprosy for more than thirty years. Unfortunately, by the time he received his diagnosis, the infection had already advanced, resulting in deformities in his hands.
Despite these challenges, Bharat remains determined and hardworking. He has been learning improved and safe farming techniques at Green Pastures Hospital in Nepal, with guidance and support from Dirgha, the hospital’s Safe Farming Trainer.
Through this training, Bharat is gaining practical knowledge and skills that will help
him continue farming safely despite his physical limitations. The training not only helps him adapt agricultural practices to his condition but also empowers him with confidence and hope for a better future.
Despite achieving elimination at the national level in 2009, cases of Leprosy are on the rise again in Nepal, partly due to severe disruptions in healthcare during the covid pandemic and the long 3-8 year incubation period between infection and diagnosis.
The Care for Cure Project, working in partnership with Green Pastures Hospital in Nepal in 2025, focused on reducing disabling conditions related to leprosy for people like Bharat with the disease and supporting their acceptance into their communities with the aim of contributing to a Nepal where leprosy transmission has been halted once more.
Regular giving helps ensure we can continue to develop and deliver projects with partners to give people hope and a better future.
