Meena's Story: A journey from adversity to empowerment
Meena is from a small village in Bihar. Following the loss of her father, the household including her mother, grandmother and younger sisters and brothers, was faced with mounting responsibilities. Her grandmother took on work doing physical labour in local farmlands, while her mother sewed clothes to earn whatever she could.
Meena says: “As the eldest child, I felt a deep sense of responsibility to change our circumstances. Witnessing the struggles faced by my grandmother and mother made me realize the importance of education and self-reliance. The adversity we faced did not break me; instead, it became my driving force and motivation.”
Meena heard about the EMMS' supported Healthcare Career Pathways programme through an awareness campaign in her area. She sent in an application and was overjoyed when she discovered she had been selected to participate. The programme equipped Meena with essential skills in written and spoken English, how to approach examinations, and perform well at interviews. She was subsequently able to pursue the General Nursing and Midwifery Course in Bihar.
“Participating in the Healthcare Career Pathway proved a turning point in my life. This achievement not only brings me immense happiness but also gives me hope for the future. I am confident that, through this new educational path, I will soon be able to help my family break free of the cycle of financial hardship. Moreover, the empowerment I have gained motivates me to support other women in my community so that they too can overcome challenges and achieve their goals.”
