Nepal emergency update: vital relief being delivered as recovery begins
Local teams continue to work alongside authorities and communities to provide practical support, assess changing needs and plan the next phase of relief and recovery.
Following the devastating flooding affecting communities in Nepal, EMMS International’s partners continue to support rescue, relief and early recovery efforts on the ground. Working in close coordination with local government, health services and disaster-management authorities, teams are responding to immediate needs while adapting plans as the situation develops.
Essential bedding reaches families in Trishuli
One example of the types of relief being delivered is 40 mattresses and bedsheets, together with 80 pillows and pillowcases, which arrived safely in Trishuli this week and distributed to people affected by the emergency. With demand for bedding still high, partners have prepared a further 160 mattresses and bedsheets and 320 pillows and covers for onward distribution.
Relief workers remain in the area, positioned on opposite sides of the river, to liaise with officials and other organisations and assess needs first-hand. This local presence is especially important as arrangements for displaced people change and some are encouraged to move from holding centres into private accommodation.
Relief support in Uttargaya
In another example, in Uttargaya, a third wave of relief materials has been handed over through local authorities for families staying in holding centres. The support is expected to reach around 400 households—approximately 1,200 people.
Field teams are coordinating regularly with ward representatives, holding-centre managers, health posts and the District Disaster Management Committee. Further visits are being planned to identify gaps, understand local guidance and align the next stage of relief.
Needs remain significant
Across affected areas, priority needs include food, hygiene supplies, bedding, clothing, clean water and sanitation facilities, medical care, solar lighting, cooking equipment and psychological support. Difficult road access and damaged routes continue to make the movement of relief materials challenging, while pressure on temporary centres places additional strain on water, sanitation and protection services.
A fast-changing emergency
Official figures issued by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on 8 September 2026 show the scale of the emergency, with search, rescue, relief and identification operations continuing across affected districts. In the latest data shared with EMMS, 1,358 people are known to have died and a further 4,326 people still unaccounted for. 13,538 people have been rescued and 7,037 receiving treatment. Search, rescue, relief and identification activities remain ongoing, while government agencies and security forces continue coordinated response operations in the affected districts.
