Remembering former trustee Jim Wallace

We are saddened to learn of the death of Rt Hon Lord Wallace of Tankerness KC (Jim Wallace), and we join many across Scotland in mourning his passing. 

Lord Wallace served as a trustee of EMMS International from September 2023 to September 2025, after first engaging with our work while serving as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (2021–2022). 

A life shaped by service

We are grateful for Jim’s significant contribution to public life through politics, civil society and the church. His leadership and integrity earned respect across many communities, and he brought that same spirit of public service to EMMS International. 

Partnership in action

Before becoming a trustee, Jim supported EMMS as an Ambassador, a role he took up after his virtual visit with his wife, Rosie, to one of our partners in Malawi during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even online, he asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully and showed real interest in the people and partnerships at the heart of our work.

Wise, present and deeply conscientious

As a trustee, Jim was known for the steady wisdom he offered at board meetings. Despite a long journey, he attended meetings in person when he could, always prepared, always attentive, and always ready to help the board make good decisions.

He was diligent and conscientious, with an approach to charity governance marked by kindness, listening, understanding and respect for others’ perspectives. Those qualities left a strong impression on staff and fellow trustees alike. We are thankful for the tone he helped to set.

With gratitude and sympathy

Jim leaves lovely memories for all who worked with him, and we give thanks for his wisdom, guidance, and faithful encouragement.

His wife Rosie and their children and grandchildren are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
