EMMS International is appealing for support to assist medical relief efforts to those who have been affected by a devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot, Nepal on Friday 3rd November.

The earthquake, that measured 6.4 on the Richter Scale, recently struck the Jajarkot district, causing widespread destruction and the loss of over 160 lives. EMMS International had been developing palliative care services in this region of Nepal, prior to the earthquake taking its toll.

The impact was severe, resulting in the tragic loss of over 160 lives and injuring approximately 480 individuals in the affected areas. The injured have been flown for treatment in our partner hospital in Kathmandu.

EMMS International’s partners in Nepal have promptly engaged with the Karnali Province and District Disaster Response teams to assess the situation, coordinate relief efforts and mobilise a team of medical personnel to provide immediate relief items, including food and non-food packages, to earthquake-affected areas.

In response to this catastrophe, Nepal's Right Honourable President, Ramchandra Paudel, has called upon all concerned and relevant parties to coordinate and expedite effective rescue and relief efforts in the affected regions. However, communication and access to remote areas near the epicentre, particularly in Ramidanda, are hampered due to landslides blocking roads.

Nepal, located along a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate converges with the Eurasian plate, is susceptible to seismic activity. In 2015, the country endured a devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of around 9,000 people, causing extensive damage to towns, historical sites, and countless homes.
