A newly acquired rubber rescue boat and equipment, including life jackets, helmets and rope, have significantly strengthened the emergency response capacity in the Baglung District of Nepal.

Baglung District is highly exposed to multiple disaster risks, particularly floods and landslides, which are common during monsoon season. The district’s rugged terrain, steep river valleys, and changing climatic conditions are also increasing risks to communities. The Kali Gandaki River and other major waterways that flow through the district can experience rapid, sudden flooding and riverbank erosion during heavy monsoon rainfall, cutting off vital transportation routes and putting lives at risk.

The lack of a dedicated rescue boat to enable the timely evacuation and rescue of people during these emergencies had been highlighted as a key gap in the emergency response capabilities of the district.

EMMS International was pleased to join a number of organisations and NGOs to support the purchase of the boat and other lifesaving equipment to address this vital need and protect lives when disasters occur.

The equipment will be utilised by the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police Disaster Management Committee to facilitate the timely rescue and evacuation of people affected by floods and reduce potential loss of life during emergencies. It will also contribute to promoting sustainable management and preparedness of rescue equipment and contribute to strengthening coordination among government agencies, security forces, humanitarian organisations, and local stakeholders.

EMMS CEO, Cathy Ratcliff said, “Building resilience and ensuring everyone has access to healthcare are core to EMMS work. We were very pleased to be able to support this project which will provide a vital lifeline for communities at risk of being cut off due to floods and landslides.”
